Reading and Writing Edventures

Whether you excel at reading and writing or are looking for additional help, this class is meant for you! Activities are individually designed to improve reading and writing motivation, comprehension, self-esteem, and vocabulary expansion and literacy growth. This class offers a certified, experienced teacher and a small class size.

Counting on Math

This is a math intervention program designed for students who are having difficulty understanding and applying Everyday Math concepts and skills. This class uses math concept books to help explore and develop tricky math skills. Children will enhance their learning through hands-on activities related to math concept books. Classes are age appropriate and taught by a certified teacher trained in Everyday Math.

Algebra

Whether you need to expand your knowledge or keep your skills sharpened over the summer, this class is for you!  The class is designed for students entering middle school algebra.  Students will begin to develop necessary algebra skills that will make algebra less challenging and more fun for all students.  Various concepts will be taught including evaluating expressions, learning orders of operations, solving equations, identifying slope, solving systems of linear equations, learning the rules of exponential properties, solving polynomials, and factoring equations.  This class will be taught by a certified teacher.  Students are required to bring a calculator to class.

Middle School/High School Geometry

This camp is designed to introduce students to the concepts they will encounter in their upcoming geometry class and will lay the foundation for success.  Students will focus on vocabulary at the beginning of camp as learning geometry has been equated to learning a whole new language.  Students will then cover beginning topics such as lines, planes, angles, and polygons.  Geometry camp will also explore polygons in depth relating their vertices, sides, and faces.  Pi will also be discussed using the relatively new concept of Taxi Cab Geometry to ensure the understanding of the true meaning; not just memorization of the number. Construction of three-dimensional shapes is also included to give a real hands-on experience for better comprehension.

Whether you are a struggling writer or someone who enjoys writing a great deal, this class is for you!  You will learn how to become a confident and proficient writer in a positive and supportive atmosphere.  You will respond to engaging prompts, explore a variety of genres, and most importantly, gain the confidence needed to tackle any writing task with ease!

Study Skills 

Great Lakes Educational Group is excited to introduce a new program for students titled SOAR® Strategic Learning Skills for College & Career Readiness with your child.  A system of simple, student-friendly strategies to help students organize, study and complete homework efficiently is the foundation for this SOAR® Strategic Learning Skills for College & Career Readiness.

 Through the SOAR® program, students will learn how to: 

  • Set goals & priorities
  • Read textbooks quickly & efficiently
  • Manage time
  • Take notes
  • Organize papers, bookbags, & other spaces 
  • Study for tests
  • Work with teachers
  • Complete homework

ACT or SAT Practice Test

The ACT practice exam will help students prepare for the real thing. Learn proven effective strategies for acing the ACT. Achievement on the ACT exam impacts choice in colleges and the ability to secure valuable scholarships. Great Lakes Educational Group's ACT practice test will prepare students for the ACT exam and help them reach their full potential. To bring: #2 pencils, calculator, a full stomach, and a good night's sleep. Parents will be provided the results at the ACT vs SAT seminar on Thursday, June 1 at 6:30pm in the Liberty School Media Center.

Free ACT vs SAT Seminar

At this session, students will receive their scores from the May 13th practice ACT and SAT tests and learn how to apply some of our most effective test-taking strategies. One of our dynamic Great Lakes Educational Group team members will lead you through the format and scoring of each test. We will also be discussing which test is better for your child: ACT vs SAT.

ACT Success covers all five sections on the ACT: English, math, reading, science reasoning, and writing.  Students learn the rules, strategies, and test-taking skills needed to be successful. This program teaches students the test taking strategies needed to increase their ACT score significantly.  Recommended for students who have a limited amount of time to prepare for the test.

Our teaching methods are effective because they motivate students to do their best.  Students use real ACT's as well as numerous skill builders to further enhance their test-taking abilities.

Students will be assigned weekly homework, usually consisting of taking a practice exam.  All practice exams must be completed by the following week.

  • Effective Reading Skills are essential to complete the entire exam.  Each student is given an individual reading technique and pacing strategy for success.
  • Critical Thinking Skills are also paramount in order to score well.  Each section requires different types of thinking skills.  The students will be taught the appropriate skills to apply in order to score well.
  • Test-Taking Skills also help reduce the anxiety many students experience on test day. Students will learn hints, techniques, and strategies that will enhance their confidence in their test-taking ability.
